Labour Day
Araw ng Paggawa
Quick Facts
Historical Background & Origins
Labour Day in the Philippines, celebrated annually on May 1, traces its roots to the country's labor movement during the American colonial period. The first official observance occurred on May 1, 1903, when the Union Obrera Democrática (Democratic Labor Union) organized a massive rally in Manila to demand better working conditions, including an eight-hour workday and the abolition of child labor. This event was inspired by the international labor movement and the Haymarket affair in Chicago. In 1908, the Philippine Assembly passed a law declaring May 1 as a public holiday for workers. Over the decades, Labour Day has evolved from a day of protest to a celebration of workers' rights and contributions, with the government often using the occasion to announce new labor policies or minimum wage adjustments. In 2026, the holiday falls on a Friday, giving many workers a long weekend to commemorate the struggles and achievements of the Filipino workforce.
Customs, Traditions & Celebrations
Labour Day in the Philippines is marked by both solemn and festive activities. Many labor unions and organizations hold rallies and marches in major cities, particularly in front of the Malacañang Palace in Manila, to voice ongoing concerns about wages, job security, and working conditions. These events are often peaceful but can include speeches, cultural performances, and the symbolic raising of labor banners. In contrast, many Filipino workers enjoy the day off by spending time with family, having picnics in parks, or traveling to tourist destinations. Traditional foods like grilled meats (inihaw), pancit, and Filipino desserts such as leche flan are common during family gatherings. Common greetings include 'Maligayang Araw ng Paggawa!' (Happy Labour Day) and 'Mabuhay ang manggagawang Pilipino!' (Long live the Filipino worker). The day is also an opportunity for employers and organizations to hold appreciation events for their employees, distributing gifts or holding team-building activities.
