Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day, commonly known as Hong Kong Establishment Day or the HKSAR Anniversary, is observed annually on 1 July. It commemorates the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China on 1 July 1997, when sovereignty over Hong Kong was transferred from the United Kingdom to China. The handover concluded more than 150 years of British colonial administration and marked Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty under the constitutional framework of “one country, two systems.”

The date is both a public holiday and an important civic occasion in Hong Kong. Under the Basic Law, Hong Kong retains a high degree of autonomy, its own legal and economic systems, and distinct social and cultural institutions, while foreign affairs and defence are handled by the Central People’s Government. The anniversary has developed into a day featuring official ceremonies, patriotic programming, community events, and public discussion about Hong Kong’s identity, history, governance, and future. In 2026, the occasion will mark the 29th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR.

The principal official tradition is a flag-raising ceremony held on the morning of 1 July, traditionally at the Golden Bauhinia Square outside the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. Senior Hong Kong officials, invited guests, uniformed services, and members of the public may attend or watch related broadcasts. The ceremony generally includes the raising of the national and regional flags, the playing of the national anthem, and formal speeches or receptions. Government departments and community organizations may also arrange exhibitions, cultural performances, youth activities, volunteer programs, and patriotic education events.

Celebrations can include concerts, sporting events, shopping promotions, family entertainment, and public displays of the national and regional flags. Fireworks have been staged in some anniversary years, although such programs are subject to official announcement and may vary. Families often spend the public holiday visiting shopping districts, parks, museums, waterfront promenades, and cultural attractions; there is no single traditional festival food specifically associated with the day. Common greetings include “Happy HKSAR Establishment Day,” “Happy Hong Kong SAR Establishment Day,” and in Chinese, “香港特別行政區成立紀念日快樂” (Happy Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day).
