Historical Background & Origins

Mountain Day (Yama no Hi) is Japan's newest national holiday, first observed in 2016 after its establishment by law in 2014. The holiday was created to provide opportunities for people to appreciate the natural beauty and cultural significance of Japan's mountainous landscapes, which cover over 70% of the country's land area. The date August 11 was chosen because the kanji character for 'mountain' (山) resembles the number 11 (十一), and it falls during the Obon season when many Japanese take summer vacations. The holiday reflects Japan's deep reverence for mountains as sacred sites in Shinto and Buddhist traditions, where they are often considered dwelling places of kami (spirits) and sites for ascetic practice.

Customs, Traditions & Celebrations

Celebrations typically involve hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities that reconnect people with nature. Many national parks and mountain regions host special events such as guided nature walks, mountain photography contests, and environmental clean-up campaigns. Japanese families often use the long weekend to visit famous peaks like Mount Fuji or the Japanese Alps. Traditional mountain temples and shrines may hold ceremonies, and some communities organize 'Mountain Day Festivals' featuring local foods, folk performances, and educational displays about mountain ecology. Common greetings include 'Yama no Hi omedetō gozaimasu' (Happy Mountain Day) or simply expressing appreciation for the mountains with 'Arigatō, yama-sama' (Thank you, mountains).
