Historical Background & Origins

National Day of Spain, known as Fiesta Nacional de España or Día de la Hispanidad, is celebrated annually on October 12. The date commemorates Christopher Columbus's first arrival in the Americas in 1492, an event that marked the beginning of a profound cultural and historical exchange between Spain and the New World. Originally designated as 'Día de la Raza' in 1918, the holiday was later reinterpreted to emphasize the shared heritage and unity of the Spanish-speaking world. In 1987, a law officially established October 12 as Spain's National Day, shifting the focus from Columbus himself to the broader concept of Hispanic identity and the cultural bonds that link Spain with Latin America, the Philippines, and other Spanish-influenced regions. The choice of October 12 also coincides with the Feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, a major religious celebration in Zaragoza, adding a layer of regional and spiritual significance to the national observance. Over the decades, the holiday has evolved to reflect Spain's modern, democratic identity while honoring its complex historical legacy.

Customs, Traditions & Celebrations

The centerpiece of National Day celebrations is the military parade in Madrid, attended by the King, the royal family, government officials, and thousands of spectators. The parade features the Spanish Armed Forces, including the army, navy, air force, and the Civil Guard, as well as display of military equipment and flyovers by the Spanish Air Force's acrobatic team, the Patrulla Águila. The day begins with the hoisting of the national flag at the Plaza de Colón and a solemn tribute to the fallen soldiers. Across Spain, towns and cities hold civic ceremonies, concerts, and cultural events that highlight Spanish music, dance, and gastronomy. Schools and institutions often organize activities about the Age of Exploration and Hispanic heritage. Typical foods enjoyed during the holiday include churros with chocolate, paella, and regional tapas, while families and friends gather for festive meals. The traditional greeting for the day is '¡Feliz Día de la Hispanidad!' or '¡Feliz Fiesta Nacional!'
